Not all custom restroom signs are created equal…or created the same, for that matter. While there are strict laws in the US dictating how restroom signs are supposed to look, other countries seem to have a certain freedom when it comes to creating their restroom signs. Some choose to go the artistic route while others choose to go the hilarious way, with each sign trying to impart the same message – that the room behind the door is a restroom for either males or females.
The different ways that establishments in many different countries try to show to people that a restroom is behind a particular wall or door can be categorized a few ways. Here are some of the general ideas and some examples of such categorizations:
Ever try walking around in a mall and suddenly feel like you need to go to the bathroom? I am quite sure that this has happened to you at one time or another. And, how were you able to find a bathroom in such a large building with a huge number of people around? The probable answer would be with the help of restroom signs that were mounted in strategic areas.
You have to admit, without these rather common looking but highly helpful signs, you would not have found the bathroom on your own. Sure, you could have asked one or two people for directions, but what if the people you asked did not know either? What if you really, really had to pee and could not find someone who can show you the way?
If you were given a chance to choose your own bathroom signs without having to think about ADA guidelines, what designs would you choose to have made? Custom bathroom signs for men or women need to be made following guidelines that the ADA has outlined. While you can actually choose to have these made in abstract, artistic or funny designs, if you choose to do so, certain problems may arise if you do so. However, worry not since there is a compromise to such a dilemma.
