Custom Plastic Signs

Plastic is one of the most commonly used materials for the creation of signs, and custom plastic signs can be crafted using many different kinds of plastic. Plastics such as acrylic, PVC, polystyrene, corrugated, and vinyl, are some of the types used for the creation of these signs. What you should be aware of is, while there are many plastic types to choose from when it comes to signage, not all types of plastic are ideal for all types of signs.

Some plastics are great for use outdoors, and others are more suited for indoor use. There are also a few that are great for both indoor and outdoor. You will need to know which plastic materials are best for outdoor use, and which ones are suited only for use indoors. You should also figure out which materials are great for your signage designs, or you can ask the help of signage experts who can help determine these for you.

When it comes to plastic, the types of signs that can be made include the following:

Directional signs – these can be made using plastic and can be crafted using engraving, printing, or painting. More often than not, directional signs are crafted using engraving to give the signs more depth and definition. Since these signs are subject to certain ADA rules, plastic is used in order to create the right color contrasts between the background and the message on the sign. With plastics, this can be done with layered plastic sheets. The other color shows through after engraving of the sign is done.

Room signs – these are also made using plastic, and engraving, due to ADA rules. These signs need to have tactile characters, Braille translations, and the right color contrasts in order for these to be deemed compliant, and with the use of layered plastic sheets, this can be done easily. The raised characters and Braille can be achieved with the use of engraving, where the area around the raised characters is engraved off and the remaining, raised letters, numbers, or a combination of both, is left after such a marking method. For the Braille translation, a raster method can be used, with the engraving machine creating the holes for the raster beads to be inserted into, or the machine itself can create the dots for the Braille text on the sign.

Directories – these can be either directories used indoors, or those used outdoors, depending on the material used as well as the size and design. Usually, outdoor directories made out of plastic use polystyrene, and are made in large sizes that people can easily see from afar. Indoor directories can be made using acrylic, vinyl, and other plastic types that are great for use indoors but may not be suited for outdoor use. These directories need to follow color contrast rules, as well as the use of fonts that are easy to read and understand, but need not have tactile characters and Braille on them. This means that you can have these crafted using a different marking medium other than engraving, as long as the aforementioned rules are followed.

Bathroom Signs – these are used indoors as well as outdoors, where these facilities can be found. A bathroom sign is considered a permanent room sign, and is one of the custom plastic signs that needs to follow the most number of ADA rules. You should ensure that the plastic you use for this is made for where it is to be mounted, indoors or outdoors, and that these signs have the right color contrasts, fonts used, tactile elements, and proper mounting height needed for it.
