Directional Signs

Directional signs serve a specific purpose, and that purpose is to show people where to go with the help of arrows and location names on one general signage. These signs can be found both indoors and outdoors. While these signs can easily belong to one category, these indoor and outdoor variations of directional signs actually sport a number of differences between each other.

One of the main differences between both variants is the material used for crafting these signs. Since outdoor signs are exposed to changing weather, more dirt and even the possibility of vandalism, the materials that are used for these are more hardy and durable. These may even be coated with protectants to slow down the deterioration of these signs and to make these easier to clean should vandals decide to put their marks on them.

The materials that are used for outdoor signs are usually resistant to tarnish and deterioration. This usually means that the materials used for these directional signs are more expensive than those that are used indoors. Since indoor directional or wayfinding signs are not exposed to the elements, you won’t need to use materials that are impervious to sunlight, rain, snow and other similar conditions.

Also worth noting is the difference in design features for both sign variants. You will easily notice that outdoor directional signs have larger fonts and symbols as compared to indoor signs. These can also use fonts and color schemes that are not necessarily ADA compliant. These can also be made in many different shapes in sizes, with some companies opting for roadside-type directional signs for their outdoor needs and others choosing to use directory-style designs for their wayfinding signage.

While there are a lot of notable differences in both of these directional sign choices, there are also a lot of similarities. Most of these signs (if not all) have arrows that point you to where you should go in order to reach the destination the arrow is being used on. Most directional signs also carry more than one destination and direction on it.

In the end, both directional signage variants serve the same purpose, and that is to point people in the right direction and to help them find the location they are looking for. Whether it be a hotel room, a numbered parking slot, a building or a facility, directional signs are essential tools for almost every establishment.
