Directory Signs

Office directory signs are used to guide people to the rooms and offices that they need to go to. While these are supposed to be signs used to direct people to where they have to go, there are some times when these don’t do that. This is because of the fact that these are poorly made and cannot be easily read and understood by whoever is reading it.

In order for your office directory signs to be readable, you need to do a few things. The reasons why some of the directory signs used by some office buildings are difficult to read include the use of fancy fonts, contrasts that do not make the characters readable, and even the kind of material being used. These are some of the things that you should take note of and try to avoid when you are putting together your own office directory signs.

Features That Make These Signs Easier to Read

So, what should you do to ensure that these signs are easier to read and can be considered useful by whoever tries to read them? Here are some things you should do:

Use fonts that are sans serif and simple – sure, you may want to create and mount directory signs that look elegant or sophisticated, but compromising usability for design and aesthetics may not be such a good idea. When you are creating signs that you want people to be able to use properly, you have to think in terms of just that – usability. Of course, this does not mean that you should create ugly signs as well. Balance out the aesthetics with the usability of the sign to come up with both a great looking sign that is not difficult to understand and read. One way to do this is to choose sans serif fonts instead of fancy, script-like fonts for the copy.

Make sure your signs have a non-glare and non-gloss finish – glossy is nice, and reflective is also nice, but both are not acceptable when it comes to signs that people need to read for directions. Some signs can be made using aluminum or stainless steel, and these can be shiny, but these are usually company name signs and commemorative plaques that are not necessarily used by people to find their way around. With directory signs, if you are planning on using metal as your material, make sure that the finish is in matte or non-gloss. The same goes for other materials that may have shiny finishes, like glass, plastic, and stone.
